  13. What is Surf's Up!?
  14.  
  15. Surf's Up! allows you to attach sounds to your icons.  While there are other 
  16. programs that attach sounds to Windows' events (dialog boxes, etc.), they 
  17. don't allow you to attach sounds to individual programs.  Enter Surf's Up!.  
  18. With this program, you can choose your own favorite WAV files to play for 
  19. each program in your shell (whether you use Progman.exe, Norton, or any 
  20. other desktop shell).  Also, Surf's Up! isn't running all the time using up 
  21. your memory, slowing down your system, or conflicting with other sound 
  22. programs.  It plays its sound then exits cleanly, and the only pause is the 
  23. length of the sound file you choose.  This program will only work with 
  24. Windows 3.1 and on a computer with a sound driver installed.
  25.  
  26. O.K.  So How Do I Use Surf's Up!
  27.  
  28. Surf's Up! is actually two programs, the sound player and the configuration 
  29. program.  The only program that you need to manually use is the 
  30. configuration program SURFINST.EXE.  
  31.  
  32. Copy SURFSUP.EXE and SURFINST.EXE to the directory of your choice, however, 
  33. the program will be easier to setup if you put SURFSUP.EXE somewhere in your 
  34. path (like your Windows directory).  Your WAV files can be anywhere you 
  35. want.  
  36.  
  37. Run SURFINST.EXE and follow this tutorial and we will setup a sound for 
  38. NOTEPAD.EXE.
  39.  
  40. Phase One
  41.  
  42. First, click on the button labeled "Get Program".  This will bring up a list 
  43. of all of your programs in the current directory.  Now switch to your 
  44. Windows directory (ie. C:\Windows).  
  45.  
  46. Once you are there, find the program NOTEPAD.EXE and highlight it by 
  47. clicking your mouse on it, then click "OK".
  48.  
  49. Now, you should be back at the original screen.  Notice that the first line 
  50. holds your program name and the second holds the complete path to the 
  51. program.  
  52.  
  53. Next, click the button labeled "Get Wave".  This will bring up the same list 
  54. as before, except this time it will only list sound files (*.WAV), and also, 
  55. the center button is activated.
  56.  
  57. Switch again to your Windows directory and highlight the file TADA.WAV.  
  58. Once it is highlighted, click the center button labeled "Test Wave" and you 
  59. should hear the sound.  Click "OK".
  60.  
  61. Now, you are back at the original screen again.  Click on the button marked 
  62. "Save" then "Exit".  If you want to configure other programs, just click 
  63. save then follow the above directions for each additional program.

  65. Phase Two
  66.  
  67. What we just did was tell Surf's Up! what sound to play for NOTEPAD.EXE.  We 
  68. now need to tell the Program Manager that it needs to look for a sound.
  69.  
  70. Find the icon for Notepad in the Program Manager and click on it once to 
  71. highlight it.  Then click on File and Properties in the menu bar (or press 
  72. Alt+Enter) to bring up the properties box.
  73.  
  74. The second line should read "C:\Windows\Notepad.exe".  
  75. Change this to read "C:\Windows\Surfsup.exe Notepad.exe".  Note:  The path 
  76. used in this line should reflect the path of Surfsup.exe, not Notepad.exe.

  78. Note:  The text in the boxes will scroll past the box's edge.

  80. The last step is to  change the icon back to its original state by clicking 
  81. "Change Icon" and selecting "Notepad.exe"  (This is explained in detail in 
  82. your Windows manual).  Then click "OK".

  84. That's it, you're done!  If you decide to change the sound for this icon in 
  85. the future, just follow the steps in Phase One only.

  87. Double-click on the Notepad icon and you should hear a WAV before the 
  88. program starts.

  92. A lot of time and effort goes into programming.  I don't believe in 
  93. crippling programs, slowing them down, or having undue nag boxes at 
  94. inappropriate times.  Please reward my efforts to bring you top-quality 
  95. Shareware.
